Abcd moles skin#
Evolving - A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest, or if you see any change in size, shape or color.B for Border Look at the border of the mole. If both sides look different, the mole is asymmetrical and should be monitored. A for Asymmetry If you fold the mole in half, does it look the same on both sides If it looks the same on both sides, then it is symmetrical. C olor: Multiple colors, changes in color or uneven color. The ABCDE rule can help you remember what to look for when checking your moles. B order: Notched, irregular or scalloped borders. Seek a doctor's opinion if they are bigger than this or change in size. This ABCDE guide can help you determine if a mole or spot may indicate melanoma or other skin cancers: A symmetrical shape: One half is unlike the other half and not round or oval. A normal mole will have a solid border, whereas an abnormal growth will be blotchy and inconsistent. Asymmetry refers to the shape of a mole if it’s larger on one side or another, it may be cancerous. Diameter - Melanomas are usually greater than 6 millimeters (the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, but they can be smaller. The best way to remember is by using the ABCDEs of suspicious moles: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution.Color - Is the color uneven from one area to another? Does it have shades of tan, brown or black, or is sometimes white, red or blue? Color changes could be a warning sign.A regular mole will have a smoother, rounder edge. Border - An irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border. An irregular shaped mole with two sides that look very different is a warning sign. Asymmetry - One half is unlike the other half.Look for new or existing moles against these five criteria. Common, harmless moles are often circular, whereas melanoma can be ragged or blurred. The edges of melanoma are irregular and uneven. Cancerous moles often appear to have one half that does not mirror the other.

Be sure to check every surface of your skin. Check out the ABCDE rules of melanoma skin care to help catch skin cancer in the earliest possible stage. Face a mirror to look at your front and back, then raise your arms to look at your left and right sides. To perform a self-examination, scan yourself from head to toe.
